Good Afternoon, I’m Josie Salyer reporting from Emory and Henry College. A pressing issue around college campuses today is the severe lack of sleep that is taking a toll on students. Arianna Huffington of Huffpost.com recently published an article with startling statistics about the average amount of sleep college students are getting.
84% of students revealed that 8 hours of sleep would be ideal for a school night.
Only 16% of these students said they usually get 8 hours of a sleep a night
A shocking 79% of students admitted to only getting 5 to 7 hours of sleep a night
What causes this lack of sleep? The answer is not too much homework, but spending too much
time online. 86% of students admitted to taking their devices to bed for texting and other
non-school activities. 90% of students leave their phones on when they go to sleep.
I asked freshman Lauren Boyda to comment on this issue and if her devices actually
distract her from getting an adequate amount of sleep.
Lauren revealed that being on her phone at night is a way to unwind from a difficult day.
However, she admitted to her phone being a distraction from sleep. Here are her final thoughts.
While spending time online can be relaxing, there is no denying that it is a definite way to
possibly lose sleep. To college students everywhere, relax, put down your phone, and get the
sleep you need.
